Alessi’s stunning new La Stanza dello Scirocco Centrepiece is something quite unlike everything you’ve seen before.

La Stanza dello Scirocco, or, in English, the Scirocco Room, is named for a small, windowless room you’ll find at the very centre of many old country homes in Sicily. It’s a room with no windows; the only room in the house where the residents can take shelter when the warm, harsh African winds lash Sicily for three days straight, leaving everything covered in sand.

For those three days, the family will be forced to reside in the Scirocco Room, keeping themselves occupied and anticipating their return to the outside world.

At any moment in the Scirocco Room, the door could blow open, scattering the room’s contents to the wild winds of Africa. And it’s this instability, this anticipation, this leaving-behind of the everyday that Alessi’s La Stanza dello Scirocco is all about. It’s a tangle of windswept oblongs, rendered in matte black steel, which, whipped together, form the shape of a bowl.
